Maarten with the replenishment of one of the nation's primary beaches. Maurice Lake on Monday afternoon met with representatives of the Soualiga Social Movement SSM and a representative of the Cay Hill Community Council, and was very impressed with the collaboration between the two and the plans they have developed for the community. The purpose of the meeting was for SSM to give the Minister an update with respect to the organizations past and current community oriented activities.
At the same time the two organizations are seeking the Minister's support for their projects and finding out what may be the possibilities of working along with the Waste to Energy project. Minister Maurice Lake told both organization reps present that he fully supports what they are trying to do and commends them for the good work that they are doing.
The Minister informed the two groups about the process regarding the Waste to Energy Plant and further explained that he wasn't able to go into too much detail since the bidding process is underway. Minister Lake promised to meet with both groups once the bidding process had been concluded with the selection of a company that would execute the project.
SSM plans to assist in helping create employment and other social beneficial activities for the youth. The joint collaboration should lead to the initiation of pilot projects that would create employment and therefore fight poverty overall. Minister Lake also informed the representatives about plans for the upgrading and beautification of Cay Hill as well as a location for a Community Center and Basketball Court.
The focus will be on linking community residents, focusing more on youths, with existing social educational programs. These educational programs are besides the regular assistance and empowerment session that the Community Help Desk offers. Minister of Public Health, Social Development, and Labor, Cornelius de Weever, praised the efforts of the team that worked hard to put the program together and urged the community to use the CHD.

A team of wildlife experts and event coordinators conducted a test run of the birding tour at Loterie Farm this past Saturday to plan the best route for the birdwatching tour, and noted a wide variety of migratory and resident birds along the route, including hummingbirds, thrashers, redstarts, and warblers.
Local artist and Les Fruits de Mer Secretary Stephen Winkel is designing special wildlife-inspired children's art activities for the event, which will include decorating bird feeders made from calabashes. Environmental Protection in the Caribbean EPIC is organizing the bird education station, where event guests will learn to recognize birds by their song.

The broadleaf forest on the western slope of Pic Paradis, including Loterie Farm, is a unique environment that is home to an extraordinary array of fascinating animal species.
This habitat, with its large trees and full canopy, is both essential and breathtaking. Martin, this one has provided the most unique window into the life of migratory birds. This forest alone has been the location of at least seven first island records of bird species and played a significant role in the re-establishment of such resident forest species as Scaly-breasted Thrasher, Scaly-naped Pigeon, and Bridled Quail Dove.
I can't imagine the island without this forest. Yokoyama will be hosting the bug discovery station, which will showcase a variety of live insects and other invertebrates from St. Martin, including walking sticks, katydids, caterpillars and spiders. The Les Fruits de Mer Association is currently seeking additional volunteers to help out at the event, and sponsorship for event materials including art supplies for the kids' activities, t-shirts, additional binoculars, and drinking water.

The Farm has hosted a great deal of biological research, including ongoing studies of birds and other animals. Loterie Farm offers hiking and zip-lining as well as a gourmet restaurant, lounge, and spring-fed swimming pool. Les Fruits de Mer is a non-profit association based in St. Martin whose core mission is to raise awareness about nature, culture, and sport.
The organization carries out this mission through publications, an education program, and special public outreach events that entertain, inspire, and inform. Maarten provides standardized Environmental and Natural Heritage Education classes, presentations and excursions for primary, secondary and tertiary schools, community groups, church groups and other organizations on Sint Maarten free of costs to the participants and has worked with thousands of school children and numerous community groups since The Foundation's Environmental Education program covers a wide-range of topics and includes classes on and excursions related to St.
Maarten's forests, ocean pollution, the environmental challenges St. Maarten faces and the wildlife and ecology of St. Maarten's wetlands. The program was managed by one staff member from to the ending of but has since become the most sought after environmental education program on the island.
